UN Calls on UAE to Release British Man Imprisoned in Dubai Since 2008

UN working group rules that Ryan Cornelius has been held arbitrarily and subjected to rights violations

The Guardian reports on a recent ruling by the UN working group on arbitrary detention that Ryan Cornelius has been held arbitrarily in the UAE since 2008 when he was arrested at Dubai airport.

In response to a complaint filed by IHR-Advisors on Ryan’s behalf, the UN working group’s ruling states that his human rights were violated both in his initial arrest and in the subsequent legal proceedings, constituting arbitrary detention.

Rhys Davies, said:

“The mistreatment that Ryan has been subjected to by the authorities in the UAE shows a flagrant disregard for fundamental human rights. The FCDO cannot continue to ignore its duty to defend the rights of British citizens abroad. Mr Cornelius has been held arbitrarily for far too long and needs to be brought home to his family immediately.”
